In the novel Elephants Can Remember, Mrs Janet Whittaker was the elderly cook-housekeeper at Overcliffe. The deaths of Alistair and Margaret Ravenscroft took place on her day off.
According to Chief Superintendent Garroway, she is rather deaf and slightly blind. She had not been able to give the police much information that they found helpful for the investigation. However, she had mentioned that the dog had attacked Lady Ravenscroft more than once and had bitten her, although it had not been severe.
Mrs Whittaker had also told the police that Lady Ravenscroft had been wearing the wig with little curls all over it almost all the time for the last few weeks before her death.
