In the short story The Gypsy, Mrs Rowse is the landlady at the inn by the moor, where Macfarlane is staying. Towards the end of the story she tells Macfarlane about the the local belief that queer things are to be seen in the moors at night, in particular, a sailor and a gypsy girl who were crossed in love. They had not been seen for quite a while but Macfarlane, who has just been with Alistair Haworth wonders if they will walk again.
