In the short story In a Glass Darkly, Mrs Oldam is the wife of Major Oldam. They are of the Carslake family and staying with them at Badgeworthy at the same time as the unnamed narrator of the story. They occupied the bedroom opposite his. The narrator saw in his room mirror a reflection of a larger bedroom with two bedsteads. At the foot of the bed was a man strangling a fair-haired woman. He asked Neil Carslake whether Mrs Oldam had fair hair but was told her hair was dark, so it could not have been the Oldams.
