In the novel They do it with Mirrors, Mrs Moncrieff is the invalid tyrannical mother of Miss Moncrieff, who lived with her in St. Mary Mead. When Mrs Moncrieff died, the villagers were happy, because Miss Moncrieff could finally travel around the world and be free from her, but it turned out that that didn't happen.
