In the novel The Hollow, Mrs Medway is the cook at The Hollow. Lady Angkatell thought she was a very good cook who showed great delicacy of feeling in her choice of dishes, such as cold ducks and caramel custard for supper on the day when John Christow had been shot. Despite the tragedy, Lady Angkatell felt Mrs Medway chose just the right kind of food to suit the mood and soothe.
Like most loyal domestic staff, Mrs Medway believed in not having dealings with the police as much as possible. she and Gudgeon were at the forefront of reprimanding Doris Emmott the kitchenmaid for telling Sergeant Clark that she had seen Gudgeon holding a revolver on the day of the killing. According to Lady Angkatell, Mrs Medway bullied Doris so much that it reduced Doris to a flood of tears. So upset was Mrs Medway about coming up against the police that Lady Angkatell remarked that her cheese soufflé subsequently became quite uneatable.
