In the novel The Hollow, Mrs Mears is the wife of one of the gardeners at The Hollow. She is left-handed and has a small baby. Lucy Angkatell once picked up a telephon and then could not remember what she picked it up for. Later she remembered that she picked it up to simulate holding a baby because she was wondering why Mrs Mears held her baby in an odd way. She then realised that she was left handed. Lady Angkatell mentioned that incident as an example of strange things that she sometimes does and then cannot remember why. As her husband put it, what went on, or did not go on in her mind had been "the despair of everyone who knows you well for years." Certainly, Inspector Grange, while questioning Lady Angkatell, felt his head spinning round.
