In the novel A Pocket Full of Rye, Mrs Emmett is mentioned by Miss Marple. Mrs Emmett was not the social equal of her husband, the bank manager in St. Mary Mead. This made her rather lonely, since she didn’t fit in with the more genteel women and could no longer socialise with the wives of the trades men.

Miss Marple felt sorry for her, as she did for Mrs Percival Fortescue for the same reason.

BBC Radio 4[]
