In the short story Sanctuary, Mrs Pam Eccles (née Sandbourne) is the wife of Mr Eccles. She claims that the man who was found dying in the church is her brother William Sandbourne.

Mrs Eccles has a mean, small pursed-up mouth and is vaguely flashy. Her voice is thin and reedy.

It is later revealed that Mrs Eccles does have a brother named Sandbourne, but the man found in the church is actually Walter St John. Her claim that he was her brother was just a guise to get hold of his belongings, especially a cloakroom ticket.

It is revealed that Mrs Eccles and her husband are suspects in several robberies near Chipping Cleghorn.
