In the novel A Pocket Full of Rye, Mrs Crump is the cook at Yewtree Lodge. She is married to Mr Crump. Mary Dove says that Mrs Crump is one of the best cooks she has ever come across.
Mrs Crump is described as a "woman of vast proportions, with a red face". She is offended when the police come to Yewtree Lodge asking questions about what Rex Fortescue had for breakfast on the day of his death. She says that anything she has sent to the dining room has been just what it should be. It takes Inspector Neele some time to appease her.
