In the short story The Submarine Plans, Mrs Conrad was a woman well-known in London society although, as Lord Alloway told Poirot, surprisingly little was known about her, where she came from and what her past life had been. She was especially active in foreign office and diplomatic circles and thus aroused the suspicion of the Secret Service. At the time the submarine plans were stolen, Lord Alloway had invited her as a guest at his country home "Sharples" so that she might be observed "at close quarters".

Captain Hastings described Mrs Conrad as a woman of about thirty five, with golden hair, and "a slight tendency to embonpoint."
