In the novel At Bertram’s Hotel, Mrs Carpenter is the middle-aged chaperone of Elvira Blake while travelling from school in Italy back to England. She is described as being "fussy looking".

She is a relative of either Colonel Luscombe or Elvira.

Mrs Carpenter occupies room 28 on the second floor of Bertram's Hotel, while Elvira is in room 29. There is a bathroom in between the two rooms.

Portrayals[]

In the BBC 1987 adaptation of the novel, there is a scene of Miss Carpenter (she is a miss in this adaptation) at the Air Terminal (probably Kensington Air Terminal) with a group of students returning from Italy. After Derek Luscombe meets Elvira at the terminal, she goes to tell Miss Carpenter that his guardian had come to collect her. Miss Carpenter did not stay at the hotel in this adaptation. The character is seen in a green bonnet rather than a "flowered violet" hat. She does not have a speaking part and the actress is not credited.
