In the short story Death by Drowning, Mrs Bartlett is a widow living at 2 Mill Cottages, in St. Mary Mead who does laundry for fellow villages as a form of extra income. She also has a lodger, the carpenter Joe Ellis. Mrs Bartlett gave an alibi for Ellis. According to her, at the time of the drowning of Rose Emmott, Joe was at home fixing a dresser for the kitchen with her help.

Mrs Bartlett is described as a big stout woman of middle age with a pleasant face and blue eyes.
