In the novel The Moving Finger, Mrs Baker is the mother of Beatrice Baker. Mrs Baker is described as "a big broad weather-beaten woman with a rapid flow of speech".

Beatrice's boyfriend George had received an anonymous letter alleging that Beatrice was seeing "Fred Ledbetter's Tom" and so they quarrelled. Mrs Baker approached Jerry Burton for help. In Mrs Baker's opinion, the letters circulating in the village had been written by the "local witch" Mrs Cleat.

Mrs Baker does not appear in US editions of the book as sections involving her are abridged.
