In the novel The Murder at the Vicarage, Mrs Archer is a cleaning woman. She came and worked for Lawrence Redding every morning. She is the mother of Archer, and is described as "a somewhat doddering old woman".

After the murder of Colonel Protheroe, Mrs Archer is questioned about the pistol that Lawrence owns. At first, she tells the police that she cannot remember when she last saw it, or whether it had been there in the morning on the day of the murder. However, during the inquest, she is able to identify the pistol as Lawrence's, and she says that she is quite sure it was there when she left at a quarter to one on the day of the murder.
