In the novel A Murder is Announced, Mr Totman is the stationer in Chipping Cleghorn with a shop on the High Street. At the end of the novel, after their marriage, Edmund Swettenham and Phillipa Haymes came to the shop to order various newspapers according to their interests but they did not want the Chipping Cleghorn Gazette. Totman was much surprised and asked them several times to confirm and reconfirm that they did not want the gazette, but they were certain about it.
