In the authorised Miss Marple continuation short story Miss Marple Takes Manhattan, Mr Smith, together with Mr Naysmith are two residents of St. Mary Mead mentioned by Miss Marple as a village parallel of what is happening in the events in the story. Mr Smith had voted against the renovation of the vicarge while Mr Naysmith had voted in favour. Mr Smith had been outvoted but he then spread the rumour that Mr Naysmith had actually voted against and not for. He went further to claim that Mr Naysmith had been embezzling church funds. These were all lies but it took a long time to untangle the falsehoods. Mr Naysmith's reputation was destroyed and even after the lies were exposed, some people never really believe that Naysmith had done nothing wrong.
Mr Smith was against the renovation of the vicarage and when he was outvoted, probably choose to attack Naysmith as a convenient target. Smith was a part of a group trying to buy the land the vicarage stood on to develop houses. Some of these people later went on to become partners in "The Development".
