In the novel One, Two, Buckle My Shoe, Mr Selby is the secretary of the banker Alistair Blunt. As part of his duties, he received Poirot at Blunt's Chelsea residence when the latter arrived for his appointment with Blunt. Selby apologised because Blunt had been urgently called away to mee the Prime Minister. Selby also extended to Poirot Blunt's invitation to spend the weekend with him at Exsham, his country house in Kent.

Selby is described as a tall, limp young man with an accomplished social manner.

Selby does not occur in ITV's 1992 adaptation of the novel. There, Blunt's secretary is Helen Montressor.
