In the short story The Case of the City Clerk Mr Roberts is a forty-eight year old man, working as a clerk in the City. He is married and has two children. His only wish is to "live gloriously", if only for a few minutes. He contacts Parker Pyne, but can only pay £5, wich Parker Pyne accepts as fee.

In the version published in The Strand Magazine the story is named The £10 Adventure, which indicates a higher fee.

Portrayals[]

Roberts is played by Chris Langham in The £199 Adventure which is a radio drama adaptation of the story produced for BBC Radio 4. There he is given a first name "Bobby". His background and request to Parker Pyne is the same but the adventure which he experiences is quite different and the price he has to pay has, of course, gone up to £199 as the setting has been modernized.
