In the Parker Pyne short story The Case of the Discontented Soldier, Mr Reid is the name of a lawyer from Melbourne. He calls on Freda Clegg to tell her that her late father had left a vast fortune to her. The award would be dependent on Freda having in her possession certain papers left by her father. It later turned out that Mr Reid was a persona adopted by an actor Lorrimar, playing a role scripted by Ariadne Oliver. His role was to create in Freda an impression that she had something of value which certain evil people wanted and that her life would be in danger.
