Mr Penderley is part of the house agents Galbraith & Penderley. At the time of the events in the novel, he is the principal partner. He was not part of the firm when Major Halliday rented St. Catherines and hence he could not answer the enquiries of Gwenda Reed about the events some thirty years ago, and his head clerk Mr Narracott who might have remembered had died just recently. However Mr Penderley did give her the address of Mr Galbraith, an elderly one time partner who might remember.
