When Wilhelmina Lawson talks about messages from "Those who have Passed Over", Emily Arundell tells her that she had better not let the vicar hear her. Miss Lawson says that she wishes Mr Lonsdale would examine the subject, as it seems narrow-minded to condemn a thing that one has not investigated.
