In the novel Elephants Can Remember, Mr Edmunds was the tutor of Edward Ravenscroft. According to Mrs Buckle, who was a part-time cleaner at Overcliffe, Edmunds was employed to help Edwards because he couldn't pass some sort of exam at prep school. He was there for about a year.

Mrs Buckle did not like Edmunds--he was a namby-pamby sort of young man, and she thought General Ravenscroft didn't like him either, although he had very nice manners. But Mrs Ravenscroft seemed to get on well with him--they were both very musical and they seemed to have a lot in common. She was the one who really chose him for the job. Edmunds also got on well with Edward--"Almost a bit of hero worship". However Mrs Buckle dismissed any idea of anything improper going on between Edmunds and Mrs Ravenscroft.
