In the novel A Murder is Announced, Mr Butt is the father of Johnnie Butt. Mr Butt spoke to Mr Timkins from Little Worsdale and proudly compared the Julian Harmon vicar of Chipping Cleghorn with Mr Goss, the vicar of Little Worsdale. According to Butt, Julian is learned and brings "culture" to the village. Mr Butt is an atheist and did not go to church but had recently started attending just to listen to Julian's sermons.
