In the short story The Girdle of Hyppolita, Monsieur Lefarge is a French policeman from the Préfecture at Paris. After the disappearance of Winnie King, he called on Miss Lavinia Pope, Winnie's school principal, as part of his investigations. He asked to examine Winnie's luggage but Miss Pope told him that someone else from the police had already taken Winnie's trunk.

Note that "Lefarge" is a name Victoria Jones thought she heard from the dying Henry Carmichael in They Came to Baghdad. This is, of course, totally unrelated to this Paris policeman.
