In the short story The Under Dog, Mon Repos is the home of Sir Reuben and Lady Astwell. It is located near Abbots Cross.
There is very little by way of description of the house. According to Owen Trefusis, the secretary of Sir Reuben, the house had originally been built for an astronomer. It had a tower in which the astronomer had set up a telescope. Sir Reuben's study was called "the tower room". From there, a spiral staircase led up to the tower where the telescope used to be and which Sir Reuben had outfitted as a bedroom. This description suggests a neo-gothic or classical design.
Portrayals[]
In ITV's 1993 adaptation of the story, Upplands, a house in the "Moderne" style located at Blythe Bridge, Stoke-on-Trent, was used as the filming location. The name "Mon Repos" was not, however, mentioned in the dialogue.
