In Yokoku Satsujin, the 2019 TV Asahi Japanese adaptation of A Murder is Announced, Momohata Hatoji (桃畑鳩児 - Hatoji Momohata in Western format) is the parallel of Patrick Simmons in the original novel. He has the nickname "Kukuru" - the sound made by a pigeon, which is the meaning of his given name. "Kukuru" lives with Kuroiwa Reiri "Reiri" (Letitia Blacklock) and others at Komichi-no-yakata (Little Hall - "Little Paddocks").
His backstory is slightly different from Patrick Simmons. In this case he is not a student but an interior decorator. After the death of Kurumai Kyuzo (Rudi Scherz) he is considered a plausible suspect especially when police find that his laptop had been used to access the dark web to buy a Tokarev pistol (the murder weapon). His age also makes him a possible candidate for Shizuho ("Pip") or Enma ("Emma"), children of Soniya (素仁愛), the sister of the late Hokkaido millionaire Gaido Randoru (外道兰毘).
In this adaptation which has a heavy focus on the police procedural approach, one of the detectives checked and located the graduating photo of the art college which he attended which showed that Momohata Hatoji is his real name. The detective also found his hometown address and spoke to relatives and neighbors, and so established that Momohata is indeed who he says he is.
The part of "Kukuru" is played by Yamamoto Ryosuke (山本涼介).
