In the novel Destination Unknown, Mohammed is a servant at Aristides's research establishment. When seeking to escape from the place, Andrew Peters managed to enlist his help since he too wanted to leave.
Among other things, Peters asked Mohammed to get him up to the roof of the building after dark. He was also to put in Peters's room some clothes similar to what he and the other servants wore.
In exchange for his services, Mohammed asked to be set up in a petrol station in Chicago. Mohammed explains this strange choice of reward to Peters. His brother-in-law had gone to America and is now operating a petrol pump in Chicago. Mohammed says he wants modernity. "Here there is money and much food and many rugs and women but it is not modern.I t is not America.'"
