In the novel Cards on the Table, Miss Burgess is the loyal secretary of Dr Roberts. She is described as being a "competent-looking young woman". At the time of the events of the novel, she had worked for Dr Roberts for about seven years.

When Superintendent Battle mentions suspicious circumstances about the death of one of the doctor's patients, Miss Burgess mentions Mrs Graves, whom she says had fancies that everybody was poisoning her. She also mentions Mrs Craddock, whom she says was hysterical and told her husband the most fantastic lies.
