In the novel Cat Among the Pigeons, Miss Bardwell is a young woman working for Henry and Joan Sutcliffe on Sunday mornings. Joan refers to her as "that half-witted daughter of the Bardwells". She and Mrs Ellis were busy preparing the mid-day meal and did not hear anything when their house was broken into. The local newpapaper in reporting the story referred to them as "the kitchen staff", which Joan considered such a beautifully grand term compared what the situation really was.
