In the short story Wireless, Miriam Robinson (née Harter) is the niece of the elderly and wealthy Mary Harter. For a time, Miriam had lived with her aunt and Mary had intended to make her her heiress. However Miriam proved unsuitable. Her aunt felt that she was always out "gadding about". In the end Miriam married a man whom Mary thought was totally unsuitable, and they had four children. As a result Mary made a new will which cut Miriam out and made her nephew Charles Ridgeway as the sole heir instead.
