In the short story The Red Signal, Milson is the manservant of Dermot West. He had his day off during the time of the events in the story and so did not appear in person. When the police came knocking at the door with a warrant for the arrest of Dermot, he sensed danger and had the presence of mind to pretend to be Milson. Inspector Verall went off but left a policeman Cawley to wait for Dermot to come home. Dermot asked permission to go to the kitchen to make some tea and from there escape by means of a tradesman's wire lift.
