In the novel The Pale Horse, Milly is the maid of Ariadne Oliver. Mark Easterbrook describes her as "an efficient dragon who guarded her mistress from the onslaughts of the world". Late in the story, Milly develops tonsilitis and has to go away to her sister's place to recover. This is fortuitous as the agency sends Ariadne Edith Binns as a replacement.
