In the novel The Murder on the Links, Merlinville-sur-Mer is a French town on the Channel coast where most of the action in the story takes place. It is halfway between Boulogne and Calais. Hercule Poirot describes it as "a quiet little place--but chic!" According to Poirot it is rapidly becoming fashionable. "Rich English people who wish to be quiet are taking it up." The town is the home of Paul Renauld. At the beginning of the story, Poirot is summoned then by Monsieur Renauld who says he desparately needs help.
