In the short story The Manhood of Edward Robinson, Maud is the fiancee of city clerk Edward Robinson. She is pretty, clever, practical, sensible and "always right", perhaps a little too much of these qualities for the hapless Edward. She frequently chided Edward for wasting money and held off their marriage, saying they needed to save up more money first. In this, she saw it as her duty to influence the weak Edward in the way he should go. Edward took Maud's reproaches silently and Maud "observed his worm-like demeanour with satisfaction".

In the episode The Manhood of Edward Robinson of The Agatha Christie Hour, a TV film adaptation of the story, the part of Maud is played by Ann Thornton. There her last name is "Lithinglow" and her mother is added as a non-canonical character who is much like her, leading Edward to ask at one point if all women grew up to be like their mothers.
