In the novel Dumb Witness, Matilda Ann Arundell was one of the sisters of Emily Arundell. She never married and died in 1912. She was buried in the churchyard in Market Basing, along with her father and some of her sisters.

According to Miss Peabody, Matilda was the eldest of the Arundell children, and was a "spotty girl". She used to teach in Sunday School, and was "sweet on one of the curates".
