In the novel The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, Mary Black lives in a lodge (either as a tenant or a lodgekeeper) in the grounds of Fernly Park. While drawing the curtains for the night on the night of the murder, she saw Ralph Paton turn in at the gate and go up towards the house. She was quite certain of this as she knew Ralph well by sight.
