In the novel A Pocket Full of Rye, Marion Bates (later Ellis) is mentioned by Miss Marple. She is the daughter of a wealthy iron monger. She was rather plain, and very much in love with a Mr Ellis. He married her for her money, but the marriage turned out quite well.
She is a village parallel of Elaine Fortescue.
