In the novel Towards Zero, Marine Hotel was a hotel at Leahead run by a Mrs Mackay. Mr Treves had been spending his holidays there for the past twenty five years. At the beginning of the novel, Mr Treves learnt that the hotel was being torn down. "Widening the front or some nonsense like that"--presumably referring to widening the road in front of it. Treves wondered why seaside resorts could not be left as they are. He felt that Leahead had its particular charm: "Regency--Pure Regency". Rufus Lord, a friend, recommended the Balmoral Court instead.
