In the novel Sleeping Murder, Major Hengrave was the husband of Mrs Hengrave and lived at Hillside in Dillmouth. He was the secretary of the local golf club in many years. In recent years he had been unwell and finally had succumbed to pleurisy which turned into double pneumonia. He died at St Monica's Nursing Home.
