Agatha Christie Wiki

In the Tommy and Tuppence short story The Sunningdale Mystery, Major Barnard is a member of Sunningdale Golf Club and an acquaintance of Captain Anthony Sessle. Barnard was playing golf with his friend Mr Lecky in the flight behind that of Sessle and Mr Hollaby.

As Barnard and Lecky approached the seventh tee, they saw Sessle go off to the public footpath on the side with a tall woman dressed in brown. Sessle was talking to the woman but Barnard and Lecky were too far to see her face clearly. Subsequently, they saw Sessle come back to the tee box to continue the game but something appeared to have happened which made Sessle play badly. They later saw Sessle give up the game after the eighth hole and walk off the course towards his cottage. Barnard and Lecky asked Hollaby about Sessle and they all wondered what had made Sessle suddenly play so badly. The three proceeded to the clubhouse thereafter. Sessle was discovered dead near the seventh tee the next morning. No one else had seen him in the interim so Barnard, Lecky and Hollaby were the last people to see him alive.
