Maggie Smith

Dame Maggie Smith CH DBE (28 December 1934 − 27 September 2024) was a British actress, who portrayed Miss Bowers in the 1978 film version of the novel Death on the Nile and Daphne Castle in the 1982 film version of the novel Evil Under the Sun. She was also the mother of actors Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin.

One of Britain's most highly acclaimed and decorated performers, Smith's most widely known roles amongst modern audiences are Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films, and Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham in Downton Abbey. Over her 70 year career, Smith won two Academy Awards (being nominated four other times), a Tony, and three Emmys. Her filmography includes The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Travels with My Aunt, Room with a View, Hook, Sister Act, The Secret Garden, Gosford Park, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Quartet, and The Lady in the Van.
