In the short story The Horses of Diomedes, Louisa Gilmore was a neighbour of Lady Carmichael in Mertonshire who had died recently. When Poirot visited Mertonshire as Lady Carmichael's guest, he was particularly interested in learning more about one General Grant and his daughters. This however required listening to Lady Carmichael as she rambled on about a wider field of individuals. Lady Carmichael soon sensed that Poirot had come to Mertonshire as part of an investigation and wanted very much to know who it is about. She speculated wildly about possible crimes and wondered if it could be the death of Louisa Gilmore but she dismissed it as she was eighty-five and had dropsy.
