In the short story The Adventure of 'The Western Star', Lord Yardly was the owner of the country home Yardly Chase. According to the Peerage consulted by Hastings, Yardly was the 10th viscount of that title. He had served in the South African War. In 1907 he married The Honourable Maude Stopperton and their two daughters were born in 1908 and 1910.

A fabulous diamond, "The Star of the East" had been in Yadly's family for generations. However, as Yardly had gotten himself into debt, he considered selling the diamond, the opposition of his wife Lady Maude Yardly notwithstanding.
