In the short story The Horses of Diomedes, Leo Staverton is a neighbour of Lady Carmichael in Mertonshire who had died recently. When Poirot visited Mertonshire as Lady Carmichael's guest, he was particularly interested in learning more about one General Grant and his daughters. This however required listening to Lady Carmichael as she rambled on about a wider field of individuals. Lady Carmichael soon sensed that Poirot had come to Mertonshire as part of an investigation and wanted very much to know who it was about. She speculated wildly about possible crimes and wondered if it could be the about Leo Staverton. He broke his neck on the hunting field recently and was all wrapped in plaster. But Lady Carmichael dismissed the idea.
