In the novel Mrs McGinty's Dead, Larkin was a baker in the village of Broadhinny. On the morning after Mrs McGinty's murder, he had called at her cottage to deliver bread from the Co-op. He found James Bentley who told him that he couldn't get any response after knocking at Mrs McGinty's bedroom door. Larkin went over to summon a neighbour Mrs Elliot who then found the body.
