In the novel Mrs McGinty's Dead, Laburnums is the home of Laura and Robin Upward, in Broadhinny. Janet Groom is the housekeeper and the late Abigail McGinty used to worker as a cleaner there on Tuesday afternoons. Ariadne Oliver also stayed there for a short time while collaborating with Robin on a stage adaptation of one of her books.

The house is described as "two cottages knocked into one and remodelled to modern taste". Poirot observed that a very large sum of money seemed to have been spent on the interior but the result was "an expensive and charming simplicity". According to directions given to Ariadne Oliver, from the hill on which Broadhinny is located, the Laburnums would be halfway down the hill on the left side after passing the church.
