In the novel Murder is Easy, Johnnie Cornish is a former fiancé of Bridget Conway. They were engaged for three years. He ended the engagement and married a nice plump widow with a North Country accent and three chins, and an income of thirty thousand a year. It was a bitter experience for Bridget. She told Luke Fitzwilliam that it cured her of all romance.

Murder is Easy (1982 film)[]
In the 1982 film adaptation, Johnnie Cornish is mentioned but not seen onscreen. Only his firstname is used but Bridget's description of him is the same. In this adaptation, there are several embellishments. Johnnie left Bridget not for a rich widow but for Amy Gibbs but Bridget lied about it to Luke, presumably making up the story of the rich widow. This gave Bridget a plausible motive for killing Amy. On the day of the Derby, Bridget had gone to London to see Johnnie, to ascertain if she had gotten over him and she told Luke that she had.
