In the novel They do it with Mirrors, Johnnie Backhouse is a resident of St. Mary Mead, who used to say, "I seen you last night", to anyone he thought it might affect. Miss Marple noted that it had been a surprisingly successful remark, because so many people have been in places where they were anxious not to be seen.

Miss Marple mentions Johnnie because Ernie Gregg reminds her of him. Ernie claimed that he had been out on the night of the murder, and had seen something. Miss Marple suspected that, like Johnnie, he had not seen anything, and was just boasting.
