Sir John Gielgud (1904-2000) was a British actor who portrayed Edward Beddoes in the 1974 version of the novel Murder on the Orient Express and Colonel Carbury in the 1988 version of the novel Appointment with Death.

Gielgud is referenced by name in the novel Sleeping Murder. When Raymond and Joan West are taking Miss Marple to the theatre for her birthday, They are seeing Gielgud in The Duchess of Malfi. (John Gielgud performed the play at the play at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket, from April 11th to May 12th 1945.[1])
