In the novel Cat Among the Pigeons, John Edmundson was a member of the Foreign Office. He was third secretary in the British embassy in Ramat at the time of the revolution. His friend Bob Rawlinson had called him on the phone and using coded language, telling him that they needed to meet urgently. However the revolution had started soon after. The roads to their rendezvous had been blocked and they were unable to meet. Rawlinson subsequently died in an aircrash.

Ephraim Pikeaway of the British Secret Service considered Edmundson to be rather "inelastic" and not an "opportunist". This was the result of his foreign office training. This made him unsuitable for the delicate mission of meeting Joan Sutcliffe to tell her about the death of Bob Rawlinson who was her brother and to try to determine the wherabouts of any package her brother might have handed to her.
